Roundhay Brownie Leader and Paralympic Champion Returns to Inspire Henley with Girlguiding
Henley is set to be inspired by a local hero as Paralympic gold medalist Ellen Buttrick, a former member of the 5th Roundhay Brownies in Leeds, joins the 3rd Henley on Thames Brownies.
Ellen, a dedicated volunteer Brownie leader herself, will be lending a hand on June 4th to support the Henley community with a litter-picking and gardening project at the renowned River and Rowing Museum.
Ellen's story is one of resilience and determination. Diagnosed with juvenile macular degeneration, a progressive eye condition, in her late teens, she overcame this challenge and returned to rowing, joining the GB Para-rowing squad in 2018. Her incredible talent and dedication have since been rewarded with four gold medals at the World Rowing Championships, European Championships, and the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020.
Buttrick credits her time with the Girlguiding movement, specifically her experience with the 5th Roundhay Brownies, for fostering the self-belief and determination that have propelled her towards sporting excellence.
