Initiatives to Make Moortown Safer!
Wednesday 28th February 2024
Good morning, Moortown readers!
Did you guess correctly?
This is Harrogate Road by the junction with Stainbeck Lane, known as Stainbeck Corner. This is a picture from May 1948!
This is what it looks like today!
We're starting off with a bit of a chilly morning, around 4°C, but no rain just yet, so that's a win! As the day warms up a teeny bit, the sun's going to play a bit of peek-a-boo with us around mid-morning, giving us a little tease at 5°C.
By lunchtime, it's still a cool 7°C and it looks like the clouds are gathering because we've got some rain chances picking up – don't forget your brolly! Through the afternoon, those temperatures are creeping up to 9-10°C, but the rain's not shy anymore, it's making more of an appearance.
Come evening, you might catch a break from the rain but the clouds are sticking around, keeping it a steady 10°C. And finally, as night falls, we'll hit our high at 11°C, but with that comes a good chance of rain.
This week…
Safer Leeds Knife Amnesty Initiative
As we bid farewell to the awe-inspiring Knife Angel, Safer Leeds is launching a powerful initiative to make our streets safer. In the Knife Angel's final week gracing our city, we have a golden opportunity to take a stand against knife crime.
🗓️ This week, from Monday 26 February to Sunday 3 March, you can be part of the change with the Knife Surrender initiative.
📍 Drop off any knives at the public helpdesk of the Leeds Police District Headquarters on Elland Road. Whether it's an unwanted kitchen knife or something more sinister, no questions will be asked. The helpdesk welcomes you from 8 am to 8 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 6 pm over the weekend.
Your anonymity is guaranteed. There's no need to share your name or any personal details.
Stay safe, stay united, and let's make a difference.

Stay Safe on the Roads: Speed Camera Locations near Moortown This Week
The West Yorkshire Police, in collaboration with the West Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership, are setting up mobile speed cameras across Leeds to encourage safer driving and reduce road casualties.
These cameras, utilising laser technology to detect speed, will be strategically placed in areas with a history of accidents. While the locations are confirmed at the time of publishing, they may change without notice. Here are the areas near Moortown where you can expect to find speed cameras this week:
Otley Old Road: Take extra caution along this stretch known for its busy traffic.
King Lane, Leeds: A popular route for Moortown commuters; watch your speedometer.
Queenswood Drive, Leeds: Residential areas are prone to accidents, so slow down.
Tong Road: Be mindful of the posted speed limits as you travel.
A58 Easterly Road, Leeds: This major artery can be a hotspot for speed checks.
A61 Harrogate Road, Alwoodley: Close to Moortown, this road requires careful attention.
A6120 East Leeds Orbital Road: A crucial link for Moortown drivers, keep an eye out for speed enforcement measures.
Drive responsibly and keep our community safe. Remember, the aim is to reduce accidents, not just to penalise drivers.
