Moortown Local Scoop- Wednesday 13th March 2024

Food Festival on our Doorstep? Yes Please! 🌯

Wednesday 13th March 2024

Good morning, Moortown readers!

Today in Moortown, the early birds will enjoy calm and partly cloudy skies with temperatures around 11°C. As we move into the morning, expect a slight chance of drizzle; however, this should clear up, leaving us with light cloud cover and a gentle temperature increase to 13°C.

However, keep those umbrellas handy! Rain chances will creep up to 47% by mid-afternoon and peak at 65% in the early evening. The wind will also pick up, gusting up to 19 km/h around midday. As the night draws in, the likelihood of rain starts to decrease, dropping to 20% by midnight. It’s wise to have a light jacket, as the temperatures will dip slightly back to 11°C.

Chapel Allerton Market in Leeds is set to expand its offerings with the inaugural Chapel Allerton Food Festival this Easter. Given the monthly market's success since its start last May, the founder Ryan Edwards is introducing the food festival to occur four times a year due to high demand and a waiting list of food businesses.

The festival will feature a variety of local food stalls like Sian’s India Express and artisan bakery Bree’osh. The event aims to be a community celebration and is scheduled for March 30 from 10 am to 6 pm.

Leeds Council Issue Update on Future of Thwaite Watermill

Leeds City Council is considering ending its lease on Thwaite Watermill amid financial pressures. While the council has not finalized the decision, the mill is set to temporarily close on April 1. The move could save the council between £660,000 to £756,000 over five years.

Despite the potential closure, the museum will honour all existing bookings until October. The council emphasized the difficult choice due to financial challenges but is committed to maintaining quality experiences at other Leeds Museums and Galleries sites.

Moortown Primary School Takes on the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel Challenge

Moortown Primary School is participating in the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel challenge from March 11th to 22nd. This initiative encourages students to travel to school actively, using methods like walking, scooting, and cycling, starting from Marks and Spencer.

It's not just a push for healthier habits; it's also about reducing air pollution and engaging students with the benefits of their efforts. Daily competitions will see schools vying for the highest number of active journeys, and with daily prize draws, every step, pedal, or scoot could bring a win for the school.
