Moortown Assault Over Burglary Accusation Results in Suspended Sentence
Daniel Crowther, aged 33, faced Leeds Crown Court for a violent outburst that occurred outside a shop on Cranmer Bank in Moortown. After accusing a man of burgling his home, Crowther engaged in a physical assault that was captured on camera, where he punched and kicked the victim, followed by stomping on his head. The attack ceased when an onlooker intervened, and Crowther departed in his vehicle. The victim sustained minor injuries, including a black eye and cuts.
Despite Crowther's previous criminal record, which includes burglary and robbery, he had not reoffended since 2011. In court, he represented himself, expressing regret for the incident and the desire to move away from a life of crime. Judge Tahir Khan KC recognised Crowther's decade of clean behaviour and his current employment status, opting for a 16-month suspended sentence rather than immediate imprisonment. The sentence includes 200 hours of unpaid work, 15 rehabilitation days, and an order to pay Ā£500 in compensation to the victim.
Historic āU1ā Number Plate May Be Sold as Leeds City Council Faces Financial Strain
Leeds City Council is contemplating the sale of the historic 'U1' private number plate, which has been associated with the Lord Mayor's car for over a century, due to financial pressures.
The number plate, first issued in Leeds in 1903, holds significant historical value as it was purchased by motoring pioneer Rowland Winn and was later gifted to the city for use by its Lord Mayors. Amidst a "dire financial position," the council is exploring asset disposals, including the potential auction of the 'U1' plate, despite some opposition favoring the sale of other assets over the cherished plate.
If sold, the 'U1' plate would be replaced by the less valuable 'L6EDS' registration, also owned by the council. This potential sale is part of a broader series of cost-saving measures by Leeds City Council, which also includes ending leases on cultural sites, closing care homes, and introducing parking charges at tourist attractions like Roundhay Park. The sale process, if approved, is estimated to take around three months to complete.
