Moortown Local Scoop- Friday 1st March 2024
Friday 1st March 2024
Good morning, Moortown readers!
Did you guess correctly?
The image was taken at Cranmer Bank during the 1970s.
This is what it looks like today!
Pack a brolly today—looks like we've got a classic case of "if you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes"! We're kicking off the morning with a nippy 1°C at 6 AM, so wrap up warm. By 8 AM, you might catch a few rogue snowflakes mixed with rain—yes, snowflakes in March!—as we hover around 2°C.
Rain's our uninvited guest pretty much all morning, with chances peaking at a drenching 80% from 9 AM to 1 PM. So, it might be wise to reconsider that walk unless you’re a duck.
The clouds might break for a quick hello from the sun around 3 PM, giving us a bit of a breather and a high of 5°C. But don't get too comfy; the rain's not done with us yet.
As the evening chills out, temperatures will slip back to 3°C around 7 PM with lighter rain spells. Night owls, keep your layers handy as we settle into a cool 2°C in the later hours.
This week…
Safer Leeds Knife Amnesty Initiative
As we bid farewell to the awe-inspiring Knife Angel, Safer Leeds is launching a powerful initiative to make our streets safer. In the Knife Angel's final week gracing our city, we have a golden opportunity to take a stand against knife crime.
🗓️ This week, from Monday 26 February to Sunday 3 March, you can be part of the change with the Knife Surrender initiative.
📍 Drop off any knives at the public helpdesk of the Leeds Police District Headquarters on Elland Road. Whether it's an unwanted kitchen knife or something more sinister, no questions will be asked. The helpdesk welcomes you from 8 am to 8 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 6 pm over the weekend.
Your anonymity is guaranteed. There's no need to share your name or any personal details.
Stay safe, stay united, and let's make a difference.

Moortown's Grace Olson Featured on 'The Yorkshire Vet' with Therapy Sheep
Grace Olson, a Moortown-based equine therapist, has penned a book titled 'Merlin Find His Magic', inspired by her therapy sheep, Merlin. The book, and Grace's work with therapy animals, will be showcased on Channel 5's 'The Yorkshire Vet'.
Grace's therapy animals, which include five sheep, offer comfort to individuals with terminal illnesses, facilitating emotional expression and healing. She aims to use proceeds from her book to provide free treatment to terminally ill patients. A book signing is scheduled at The Little Bookshop in Chapel Allerton.
Leeds Council has noted an alarming increase in unauthorised school absences, with new data showing over 830,000 instances in the city's state-funded schools during the autumn and spring terms of 2022/23.
This marks a 33% rise from the previous year. The council emphasizes that regular attendance is crucial for academic success and is working on initiatives to improve it. The trend mirrors a national post-pandemic increase in absences as parents remain cautious about sending children to school with minor ailments.

Upcoming Game for Roundhay
In Division 1 of Leeds Combination Association Football League Roundhay FC Blues have a game on Sunday 3rd against old Farnley. Currently in the division table, they are fourth with the team doing well considering they have been finding it hard for the last few fixtures to create a winning streak. They have found to win a game, lose a game then win again for the last 8 games.
Considering they won their previous game we wish them luck in the hopes that they can break this issue they are having.
